Paintings of Shaolin Arhats Practising Boxing

Shaolin martial art has a history of over a thousand years. It has always been highly appreciated.

these ten mural paintings, arhats practising Shaolin Boxing, selected from a fresco inside the White Garment Hall, show us the typical movements of Six Harmony Boxing is vigorous and changeable with exact movements. Hence it has practical value in fighting, both for attacking and defending.

The fresco was painted in 1828 AD,adopting a traditional Chinese painting art characterized by fine brushwork and close attention to detail. Its pattern is simple and unsophisticated, its style is elegant but by no means fierce, thus implying a message that instead of bullying the weak, practising Shaolin Boxing aims at building up a good physique and self-defence. The artist who painted the fresco had an intimate knowledge of martial art and faithfully recorded it in his work.

The fresco is a rare treasure of art, is valuable for the study of Shaolin Temple and of the Shaolin martial art.

On l'a toujours fortement apprécié.
